Overview

Prizes are distributed each year to French Majors recognizing the best French essay and the best majors.  Additional awards go to students going to EAP (under specific conditions) and the Paris Travel Study, and to students in charge of the Cercle Francophone. Note: All information is subject to change or cancellation without notice. Awards' amounts vary. Each application must mention the student’s full name and UCLA ID number. 

All prizes will be presented at the departmental End-of-Year reception and awardees should be present or represented at the ceremony.

Please note that monetary awards are considered taxable income. 

Application Deadline: The submission deadline for each academic year is in early May.

 

Martin-Turrill Memorial Awards

The Martin-Turrill prizes, created to honor two alumnae sisters, are distributed each year recognizing the three best French essays and the best major. Essays written from the Spring quarter of the preceding year may be submitted for the French Essay Prize by French Majors. At the end of each academic year, the Prize Committee will select one outstanding essay from among the essays submitted. The best majors are nominated by faculty members.

Best Essays: One first prize ($600), a second prize ($400), and a third prize ($300) will be awarded for research papers on a literary or cultural topic written between the Spring  and Winter quarters. Papers must be written in French and be 6 pages in length or longer. Best Major Award: $800. Students are nominated by Instructors and Faculty. More than one prize may be awarded.

 

Paris Summer Program Awards

One $1,500 prize from the Carol Minuck Fund for French Education and five $2,000 prizes from the Edgaro and Francesca Acosta Fund will be awarded to Paris Summer Program participants based on financial need and excellence in French courses.

Carol Minuck Fund for French Education: The Carol Minuck Fund for French Education was established in 2006 by UCLA alumna Marcia Canavan in memory of her sister, Carol Minuck. One prize of $1,500 will be awarded based on excellence in French courses. Students must submit a letter explaining their commitment to French studies, a copy of their DPR, and a letter of support from a recent French instructor, to Dr. Kim Jansma, Director, French Department Travel Study Program in Paris, 212 Royce Hall, Campus. 951550.

The Edgaro and Francesca Acosta Fund: Five prizes of $2,000 each will be awarded to Paris Summer Program participants based on financial need and excellence in French courses. Students must submit a letter explaining their commitment to French studies, a copy of their DPR, a copy of their Financial Aid Statement, and a letter of evaluation from a recent French instructor, to Dr. Kim Jansma, Director, French Department Travel Study Program in Paris, 212 Royce Hall, Campus. 951550.

 

French Foundation of California Education Abroad Awards

Up to five prizes of $2,000 each will be awarded on a competitive basis. Eligibility is based on the following criteria: 1) French majors participating in the education abroad program in France in the following academic year, 2) who were not born in France, 3) who have never studied in France before, 4) who have completed two years of course work in French at UCLA.
